Giovanni Battista Amendola
This is an extremely fine casting by Amendola circa 1886, commissioned by the Fine Art Society from the painting by Frederick Lord Leighton. Giovanni Battista Amendola was a child prodigy who studied in Naples under Tommaso Solari at a very young age. He then studied in Rome and Paris, finally moving to England in 1879. Here he lived in London and exhibited in Naples and at The Royal Academy from 1879-1886 with great success. In 1884 the celebrated painted Sir Lawrence Alma -Tadema exhibited a fine painting of Amendola working on a model of Lady Alma-Tadema. He formed a friendship with Lord Leighton with whom he collaborated on this sculpture. He died at the early age of 39 after returning to Italy.The painting by Leighton is entitled Wedded which is set in the Greek amphitheater of Taormina in Sicily and shows a young couple embracing after their marriage.A fine casting with superb detail and excellent patination.
